Aboriginal Projects2006 Aboriginal ProjectsMurri Ministry: Refurbishing the ‘Funeral Pantry’ Murri Ministry in the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, in partnership with the Sisters of St Joseph, has secured financial assistance to carry on the work of funeral ministry. The Mary MacKillop Foundation has provided urgent funds to refurbish the ‘Funeral Pantry’ with the necessary basic items to assist in the liturgical preparation and hospitality required. Murri Ministry was formed in 1993 to respond to the spiritual needs of the Aboriginal community and is heavily involved in funeral ministry. Services include liaison with funeral parlours, cemeteries, morgue, Centrelink and sometimes the Department of the Attorney General in the case of ‘pauper’ funerals. Liturgies are prepared, booklets printed and music chosen. Infant funerals call for special items; families are visited before and after funerals. In the past, Murri Ministry received donations in kind from various companies but these donations have ceased. This year our budget has been extremely stretched by the cost of organizing the journey of the “Pass it on. The message stick” Project. The funding will help Aboriginal families who need material, administrative and liturgical assistance for the planning of funerals and those suffering hardship through overcrowding by family visitors to funerals. We are grateful to the Mary MacKillop Foundation for enabling us to minister in ways other bodies do not. We are now in a position to call for donations to sustain a work well established.
