Relief Funding provides Volunteer Community Leader with well-deserved break

Volunteers are the lifeblood of community life and need our ongoing nurture and support. Thanks to the Mary MacKillop Foundation, Gethsemane Community Inc. in Petersham, NSW has been able to organise relief staff, enabling its volunteer community leader to take her first planned holiday in 15 years.

Gethsemane Community alleviates the stigma and distress of mental illness by providing a secure home for people with disabilities who have been homeless or living in insecure housing. Members are helped to overcome destitution, isolation and the effects of misfortune; to become more self-reliant and to regain their human dignity. At Gethsemane they can develop living skills, are able to save, have their medications assessed and become able to live independently.

The project is for the funding of ACAAS Home Support who have been hired on a trial basis for overnight relief. Having time off is essential for the community leader who is also involved in a wide range of advocacy work as well as spiritual direction. A holiday will help prevent burn-out and recoup her energies for the work of community building and maintenance.

The funding provided by the Foundation has been a great help to us in carrying out our many activities.
