2005 General ProjectsEmpowering the Laity - Promoting Spiritual Development for those in distressSpirituality cries out for support in our present culture of impersonality, secularization and pluralism. A project funded by the Mary MacKillop Foundation called ‘Promoting Spiritual Development’ offers a subsidy to those experiencing hardship in meeting their need for spiritual renewal and development. The Queensland Josephite Spiritual Directors first responded to this need in 2003 and again in 2005 and 2006. The project has empowered lay people to participate in a variety of activities through subsidized Retreats, Spiritual Companioning and, in some cases, to engage in Leadership themselves. One example is a women’s group known as ‘Weavers’ now in its sixth year. Feedback from members of the group testifies to the growth that has taken place through their acceptance of responsibility and leadership, and their renewed sense of confidence and trust. In their ministry of Queensland Dioceses, the Directors often traveled vast distances to outback areas to nurture those affected by drought and financial hardship. People in towns such as Pittsworth, Kingaroy, Wondai, Charleville, Mt Isa, Richmond and Townsville welcomed the opportunity and expressed gratitude for the assistance that enabled them to participate in an exercise giving space and value to spiritual matters. In the spirit of Mary MacKillop who brought opportunity for faith development to country and city alike, the subsidy support has been expended well in the light of respecting human dignity, relieving suffering and nurturing hope. Without it, the choice would not have been possible. Sr Therese Wilson, rsj.
