Aboriginal Projects2007 Aboriginal Projects - Funded in Partnership with Aboriginal AustraliansNew South WalesSpiritual/ Cultural Renewal Family Gathering -Kuri-ngai Partners Disadvantaged Aboriginal families from Western Sydney will gather on the NSW South Coast for a family weekend to address some of the distress encountered in their daily lives. These families live with the effects of alcohol and drugs in the community and often live in overcrowded Housing Department dwellings. The family weekend provides them with an opportunity to share their culture and their stories. They experience an opportunity for bonding and networking that enables relationships to form and be strengthened. Aboriginal Health Research Exchange 2008– The Sax Institute Committee members agreed that the Exchange will increase understanding into the research if aboriginals can contribute first hand at the conference and thus relieve the distress in the community. South AustraliaWorking Together with Aboriginal Families – St Joseph’s Family Care Centre St Joseph’s Family Care Centre provides accommodation and support to homeless families. The centre will run a parenting course for parents of children with special needs, which is not currently available in the community. Northern TerritoryEmergency Nutrition Programs – Nganampa Health Council The Nganampa Health Council provides a range of health programs to all people on the APY Lands and through their Food for Vulnerable Young Children program they will distribute food through the Women’s Council to mothers whose children are identified as failing to thrive. As a result of these and other efforts more children are meeting weight and height requirements needed to ensure wellbeing and good health. Shade cloth for Grandmothers Homemaker Project - Amata Community, APY Lands The Homemaker service in Amata provides support and modelling to mothers and fathers to provide nutrition, nurturing and care for their children. Funding was given to purchase a shade cloth over an outside cooking and eating area for this thriving example of what can be achieved when people combine their skills to strengthen communities. Western AustraliaAboriginal Education Bidydanga Remote Community Funding has been provided for two students from the remote community of Bidydanga in WA. These girls attend Boarding school in Perthville NSW and have no money to fly home for the school holidays to see their families and community. The students plan to go on to study at University in Broome when they finish high school. Seasons for Growth Ngalangangpum School Warmun Aboriginal community members, particularly children, in East Kimberley are suffering great distress due to the tragic deaths of young people, family break ups, sexual and violent abuse and general feelings of hopelessness that follow these conditions. Season for Growth aims to help these communities by training teachers and local Aboriginal woman through their grief and support programs. The program will develop symbols and materials that are culturally appropriate for the Warmun, Wyndham and Kununurra communities. Mirrilingki Spirituality Centre Workshop The staff at Mirrilingki are looking at ways to move into the future in a way that is significant for, and relevant to, the Indigenous people of the Kimberley. This two day, live-in seminar will involve key Aboriginal people and seeks to clarify goals which speak to the real and contemporary needs of the local people. In particular they are looking to address the spiritual and social welfare of the local people and help them achieve an increased measure of self reliance and human dignity.
