Success of Craft Centre established with a Foundation Grant at Bidyadanga, WA in 2005.

Bidyadanga is an Aboriginal community in the West Kimberley a couple of hours out of Broome. Two Josephite Sisters live and work in the community and they requested help from the Foundation to fund their setting up a Craft Centre where the women could come together to learn crafts such as screen printing and sewing.

Sr Robyn McNamara rsj reported that ‘the women had gained confidence and that they started to believe in their ability to create something beautiful.’ It also helped that they were able to sell the items they made. There are five language groups in the community at Bidyadanga so that an activity centre such as this has been very important in providing them with an opportunity to work together and learn a new skill which can be understood across the language divide. The money provided by the Foundation had enabled the group to purchase 100 T-shirts and the paint, screens and material needed for the sewing classes. Sr Robyn said ‘this has been a very valuable project and grew out of the women’s own desire to get involved in this way.’
